WeatherTech Custom Fit Cargo Liners for Honda Pilot, Black Review

Our new 2013 Pilot came with Honda's optional rubber mats in the seating areas but none for the cargo bay. After reading some of the reviews, I decided that the extra cost of the WeatherTech liner vs. some of the discounted Honda cargo liners is justified, based on the WeatherTech's ability to fold to allow the third row seats to be deployed. The cargo liner has maybe 2"x3" "reliefs" molded into the edges of the liner where it needs to bend when the third-row seats are raised.

Fit: The mat fits perfectly, except... The rear edge needs to find some normal shape after shipping. I had to push it hard forward to get room for the lift gate to close. After a few days of warm weather, that rear lip is self-correcting its shape, slowly correcting out the distortion that leaves it wavy.

When folded to allow the third-row seats to be up, the folded-up mat section is taller than the folded-up seat sections the mat was just laying on. So when that feature is used, the mat folds with it but the folded part of the mat seems to suddenly "grow", so the front edge of the liner sticks up past the back of the third-row seats. This isn't really a WeatherTech problem, as the mat really does fit well on the flat.

Service: Almost immediately on receiving the order from Amazon, the actual supplier fired off an e-mail to me to confirm the application and assure me that the one I selected would fit the car. I responded to the auto-generated message, and got a confirming e-mail response from a product specialist saying that the mat would in fact fit our 2013 Pilot. A simple request for confirmation of application took minutes and might avoid getting the wrong thing. Possible problem headed off before it was even the thought of an actual problem.

Comments: The mat slides around easily on the factory carpeting. I will probably glue a few squares of Velcro hook-side to the corners on the bottom to help keep the mat in place. I also found some inexpensive black car carpet, and make some drop-in pieces (2) that will help stuff stay in place rather than sliding around. I keep a carry-on sized travel case back there at all times, and it slides on the mat a little. Carpet inserts down the road may do a little more to protect the side panels of the luggage area from the wheels and handles of the hard-side travel case.

Overall I think WeatherTech did a pretty good job on these mats.

[Update 7/2013]

I've since added the Velcro patches under the front edges to keep the may from sliding backwards. It seems to have solved the migration problem. I roughed the application area slightly with some medium sandpaper so the glue would stick. I used a little yellow contact cement for a couple 3/4" x 2" strips of Velcro at the forward corners only.

I also figured out that anything I use to improve the appearance also seems to make thing a little slipperier. Best so far is 303 preservative, which keeps the black trays pretty black.

The corners of the tray partially block access to the folding hook rings on the side panels. I'm still able to use a luggage net attached at the forward rings when the need arises. I've also added a "trunk organizer" that keeps smaller stuff from bouncing around back there. It's conveniently the size of a shopping-cart bottom, so it also serves as a grocery-bag eliminator.

I haven't yet made the carpet insert, but will soon.
