Kenwood KDC-X896 eXcelon In-Dash USB/CD Receiver with Built-in Bluetooth/HD Radio Review

I got my X896 recently and it greatly improved the quality of the sound in my system, without adding new speakers or an amp ... etc.

So far it has played my MP3 and WMA files flawlessly from a 16Gb mini-USB thumb drive. I had no issues connecting via Bluetooth to my Android, and was able to make calls and play music from the phone (using A2DP) without any issues.

I also downloaded the little Kenwood Music Editor Lite software, which simply gathers the data for the songs on a USB and organizes them into a database on the USB. This allows the unit to search more efficiently through all the MP3s, so you get the standard searches by song, album, artist ... etc.

As much as I lobe this unit, I do have a few quibbles:

Phone dialling is not voice-activated. Granted this is a luxury but I am a little spoiled by the unit in my CX-9, which makes calls flawlessly using voice. Now of course it doesn't profess to have voice-activated dialling so this isn't an issue with the unit, it's just an issue with me :).

The 2nd quibble is with the buttons. I guess this is a sign of the times but I really wish manufacturers would STOP removing buttons and replacing them with menus! The whole point of a car stereo, at least in my mind, is that you should be able to select things without staring at it, and you can't do this with menu systems.

My last quibble is that I wish the jog-dial was actually a jog-dial instead of round knob. If you have a lot of music it takes many knob turns to get to an artist you want to listen to. Would be much easier of the knob was larger and had a finger-dimple.

Ok, ok, one last issue, I wish the screen was larger and could show more information. Again this is something you know before buying this unit and there are other options you could choose, so this is really not an issue with the system but just something you notice a little later.

All in all this is really an excellent system with great sound quality. It interacts flawlessly with my Android and is great at playing back MP3 and WMA files, so it works for me.
