Saddlemen Cruisn Slant Face Pouch Saddlebag - Large 3501-0384 Review

I really wanted full leather saddlebags because I like the look and because they'll last forever if you treat them well but I just couldn't justify the cost of a really nice set. The leather ones that I've seen at this price were not full grain leather and wouldn't age or weather well. These are not large bags. They fit perfectly on my Vulcan 500 without having to move my turn signals and come down to exactly the bottom of the Kawasaki factory saddlebag stays. This means that there is sufficient clearance above the exhaust on an Vulcan 500. This was something that concerned me because the Vulcan 500 exhaust slants upward.

Overall the quality is good. The material looks decent and I noticed no obvious stitching issues. One thing I did notice was that one of the quick disconnects on the inside of the bag was forced to shut by a set of pliers at the factory. This is a quality control issue. If they had taken have a second to look at why it wasn't closing they would have noticed that the base of the disconnect on the yoke side was slightly wider at the base preventing it from fully inserting into the bag opening and creating insufficient clearance. I managed to get proper clearance by just wiggling the bag a little on the mount to find a point that fit properly. This doesn't affect the function of the bag but I would have preferred not having plier marks on the latching mechanism. It's not worth returning them over though.

These bags have a simple nylon liner so it's not just an empty bag. There are also 2 mesh pockets running the length of the liners to hold smaller items in place for easy retrieval. The side pockets are great and actually have a zipper as well as a flap. The flap is basically just to give the bag a cohesive look. I haven't been stuck in the rain with it yet, but my guess is that these side pockets will not be water tight as the zipper runs to the front top corner of the pocket. I would keep cameras and phones in a ziplock bag just in case.

The quick disconnect system is pretty useful. It's 3 latches on the inside of the bag that attach to the yoke. Additionally these bags come with a quick disconnect strap that runs from the bottom of the stay to the bottom of the bag. The strap is extra long to accommodate any individual tie down issues you have. I got mine adjusted and cut the remainder off. You can literally disconnect this bag and be headed to your room in 20 seconds. Pretty cool.

I got the large bag, which is perfect for my bike. In terms of capacity, it's not a lot of space. I have my rain gear on one side and a change of clothes in the other and that takes up half of each bag. This is what I was expecting though and I just didn't want to have to carry my rain gear around with me in a backpack when I travel places. Now I can keep non valuable items in my saddlebags and free up space in my little trunk bag for things I don't want stolen, like my gps and what have you.

Overall I'd recommend this product. I'll update my review if I have any issues as I just got these. I'm keeping them permanently mounted on the bike. I keep my bike under a cover but not in a garage so if there are any issues with warping or not weathering well I'll definitely post them.

Update:

I took my bike out today because there was a 20 percent chance of rain. In Jacksonville that means it's going to rain and I wasn't let down. I wanted to try out my new saddlebags and rain gear. In the 3 hours I was out riding I spent at least half that time in steady to very heavy rain. The rain in North Florida comes down hard and fast and today was no exception. I had my rain gear on one side and a change of clothes in the other just in case I got too wet. Long story short, after an hour and a half of steady downpours, I was starting to get a little wet because the rain had started to drip down my neck into my rain gear, but my saddle bags were bone try. This was at highway speeds. Cruising around town I doubt you'd ever have an issue with water entry.

Finally, my bags are right at the 2" mark above my exhaust and as soon as I stopped my bike I check underneath to see if there were any hot spots. None at all. If you have the proper clearance over your exhaust pipes you shouldn't have any issues with heat affecting the bags.
