Product Description

Whistler CR85 High Performance Laser-Radar Detector with Ka Max Mode is designed to help eliminate false alerts from radar based traffic flow sensors. It detects Laser Atlanta Stealth mode, Laser Ally and the new LTI Truspeed S and features advanced POP Mode speed detection capabilities that respond to brief bursts of radar. The icon display with blue digital strength provides distinct visual symbols of alerts detected, modes and signal strength. Real Voice Alerts provides verbal alerts for modes selected and bands received. Three filter modes reduce false alerts caused from other radar detectors. This detector has a low emission design that is more difficult to detect by radar detector detectors (VG-2). It offers manual control of the display brightness and stores personalized settings when the unit is turned off. Whistler's exclusive Stay Alert feature can test driver alertness on long trips, increasing safety. It has alert periscopes that provide an additional visual alert. The CR85 has X band, K band, SuperWideBand Ka and Laser protection - the only 4 bands used for speed measurement. Ka band radar identifier displays Ka 33.8, 34.0, 34.3, 34.7 or 35.5 when detecting these common Ka speed radar systems and laser identifier indicates the Pulses Per Second (PPS) transmitted by Speed Laser or other forms of laser sources. It offers 360-degree Maxx coverage to detect from front, sides, and rear. There are 3 city modes/highway modes to reduce the annoyance of false alerts and a quiet mode to silence audio alerts. The Safety Warning System keeps driver informed of highway safety where transmitters are located and Alert Priority displays the most important signal when more than one is detected. The high gain lens provides an increased field of view, as well as a longer range of detection and the selectable vehicle battery saver allows customization of the automatic shutdown feature. This radar detector is capable of working with the optional Intellicord power cord.

Whistler CR85 High Performance Laser-Radar Detector with Ka Max Mode Review

I just wanted to post an update and an initial review of the Whistler CR85. I JUST bought the lastest version of the Pro 78se in early July. If anyone here lives/travels through Atlanta, GA, they will know GSP is out almost every day in the metro area as well as other county and city police (Dekalb, Atlanta, Cobb, Doraville, Gwinnett, and etc). The terrain on both street and highway is VERY hilly and full of curves. There is also the potential for TONS of falsing due to Alanta being a high-tech city. There isn't much flat straight areas here unless you're heading out to the country or on your way out/in of Georgia. All these LEOs use the most sneaky cop traps and latest LIDAR and radar tools out there. The virtually NEVER use Constant On, only Instant On Radar Pulses and are sneaky with their lidar shots as well. If there's an environment where you have the LEAST warning to radar or lidar, it's ATLANTA! Virtually ALL of the LEOs here use LIDAR unless you're out in the country or there are multiple LEOs lined up for a speed trap. There are tons of Motorcycles, Dodge Chargers, Crown Vics, Tahoes, and you name it used on a REGULAR basis. If there's a town you're gonna get caught speeding in, it's DEFINITELY Atlanta!

With this being said, I have looked all over for a real world review on the new Whistler CR series and couldn't find one. I had done my research and was impressed with the latest Pro 78se and thought there wouldn't be much difference between the Pro78se and the CR85. WRONG! I already bought my wife a CR85 and got to test both (the CR85 and Pro 78se) out in her car. At first, with the same settings, it didn't really seem like much of a difference between the 2 until I had a few encounters. Anyhow, here's the difference in cliffnotes: Settings for BOTH detectors were: X-band OFF, K-band ON, Ka-MAX ID, LSRID, Highway, Pop OFF, SWS ON, TFSR ON, Filter (the default setting), and a few others that shouldn't affect your detection. The BIGGEST difference is the CR85 really does catch ALL the new laser guns! I had both detectors mounted up high just under the tint strip on opposite sides of the rearview mirror about a 12 inches apart (CR85 hardwired) and tested for falsing with this setup vs only one detector on at a time. Both are very quiet here with TFSR ON (a MUST in Atlanta), but the CR85 has additional filter settings if you want that the Pro78se doesn't have (but I don't need to use them since neither falses much at all ever here). I didn't really see any differences with the exception of one KNOWN K-band false alert at a Kaiser Permanente parking lot I frequently pass (meaning I got a false alert while both detectors were on that I normally don't get at all on either by themselves).

The CR85 consistently had AT LEAST a 5 seconds alert head-start traveling 65-70mph = (500-750 feet or so give or take???) over the Pro 78se (lastest version remember so older Pro 78se's will be even slower). The CR85 is also a BEAST with detecting LASER (LIDAR)! I was in the left lane doing 65 mph during moderate traffic and picked up on a GSP shooting laser OFF AXIS (in a slight curve), at the bottom of a hill facing forward (direction of travel) sitting in an exit gore on the right. I got a laser detection at least 0.5 miles back (completely out of sight) give or take, and what makes it so bad, the Pro78se NEVER alerted to it at all. I had PLENTY of time to slow down even if I was doing over 100mph. Of course in Atlanta, you virtually ALWAYS have a rabbit, so that was the tip off to the laser but this was a sneaky trap! Had I been speeding, with the Pro78se I would have been caught! Mind you I've been by dozens of LEOs here with it and it virtually never goes off to lidar (they must be using Laser Ally, Truspeed S, Prolaser III's, etc) and if it does, a blind person would have seen the LEO before the Pro78se went off lol. This is NOT the case with the CR85, it's a BEAST with picking up LIDAR! I had this happen multiple times so far with similar conditions.

Anyhow, I actually feel safe with the CR85's lidar detection with a rabbit or 2 and using your brain of course. I was considering a laser jammer before I saw how well the CR85 has picked up LIDAR! Yes it's THAT GOOD! I didn't discuss K-band and Ka-Band detection much because it's not used much here on the interstates in the metro area, but I can tell you both K and Ka-band detection is GREATLY improved on the CR85 meaning MUCH MORE range and heads-up! Both the Pro78se and CR85 picked up on all K and Ka-band LEOs showing the same ID numbers from what I can remember. The difference between the 2 was so great that my wife told me to pull the trigger on another CR85 for myself which should be here tomorrow lol.
