BOYO VT-MHC ATSC+ATSC M/H Dual Combo TV Tuner Review

I'm pretty happy with this unit and picked it because it decodes both ATSC (normal over the air HDTV signals) and ATSC-MH (mobile signals that you can see while driving). There are not that many mobile signals available at the present time but I do get one major channel in my market and I think others are going to launch them soon. The unit also picks up all the normal channels you'd get over the air at home (including all the major networks, etc) but these "normal" HDTV signals are NOT for use in moving vehicles (that's what the MOBILE ATSC-MH part of this product is for).

It is picking up surprisingly strong signals using the included antenna. I at first tried to stick the antenna under the dash but while it did pick up strong stations in that mounting location, it picked up a LOT more when I moved the antenna and hid it behind my plastic bumper cover in the front of the car. It has a strong magnet so you can plop it on your roof too if you want.

I was a bit cautious about buying this unit because I had never heard of the brand. The case looked very similar to a unit sold by Crutchfield so I opened up both manuals before purchase and compared them to see if I could find any evidence that they were indeed the same. Based on menus and programming screens, it seems like they are identical units. (That unit is under the AcceleVision/Accele brand model DTV-200.) Although there were no reviews on the unit here on Amazon, I did find a couple of positive reviews on the Accele model and decided to go for it based on those.

In short, this unit did everything I expected it to and the user interface is surprisingly good for something I assume was made inexpensively in china. I don't have any real complaints. It was easy to hook up and the picture quality is perfect for small in-vehicle screens. (Note, this does NOT have HTDV signal outputs so it is NOT suitable for regular sized TV screens like you might have in an RV). It is perfect for seat-back televisions and such and the picture does look HD on those screens.

There are only "nice to have" feature requests that I could make. The user interface would be nicer if it had an option to automatically show the channel and programming information when you are changing channels, like the way it works on most home cable and satellite interfaces. Instead, I find myself browsing channels with that "info menu" or whatever turned on (it toggles on and off with one button on the small remote and stays on between channel changes until you turn it off again). But who knows -- maybe that is even an option that I have not found yet. I really have not looked at the settings menus too closely as the unit works so nicely out of the box with very little fuss with setup.

This unit is a little on the expensive side compared to some other units I looked at but I don't think those units handled the mobile MH broadcasts like this one does. I decided it was worth the extra money just to have that feature.
