AFX FX-39 DS Helmet - 3X-Large/Pearl White Review

This is my review of the AFX-39 dual sport helmet. I owned the previous model 37 and liked it well enough except for the fact that the liner material would leave a polka dot pattern on my forehead. It brought more than a few curious stares but hey, it was a conversation starter.

I was very pleased to see that this new model had a significant upgrade in the liner material. No more dotted forehead and the chinstrap securing mechanism is the bomb! I didn't think I was going to like it but after a few outings I have to say I am a believer and I hope more makers adopt this device.

Some of the same criticisms that I had with the model 37 apply to this one as well - unless you have the neck of a linebacker or jowls that would shame an 18th century baron you will have considerable excess chin strap that has no means of being secured and will flap around in the breeze and drive you nuts. I do the same with the 39 that I did with the 37 and that is to jam the loose end up into the seam between the helmet and ear pads. An easy maneuver if you remember to do this before riding off (which I never do) but a much more frustrating move when you are underway with gloves on. AFX, please put a snap or a clip or something there. It is also a very noisy helmet, I almost always wear earplugs but even with those it's a pretty loud environment at speed. Thankfully the shield distortion is all but gone with this model. There were many complaints of distortion with the model 37, I did not notice any distortion with mine until I had stored it for a few months with the shield closed. I think this is the cause of the bend in the shield that causes this problem so I am careful to store this new helmet with the shield up.

Now to my final criticism and the flaw that has me shelving this helmet for now. This helmet needs a chin curtain. There is a vortex of turbulent air created behind the face shield when air hits your chest at speeds over 45mph. At best this swirling air mass dries your eyes out in a hurry. At worst it throws whatever debris you are riding through right into your face and eyes. On my last ride I had a honeybee briefly lodge in my right nostril - much to my alarm and I'm sure the bee's as well. I quickly snorted the bugger out and then was given an extremely close range visual identification of the critter as it ricocheted around the interior of my helmet. This will end badly I thought. Thankfully for us both as I got hard on the brakes I dropped below the critical speed, the vortex subsided and the insect dropped harmlessly into my lap. For those of you who are curious, a honeybee has (not surprisingly) a sweet smell, rather pleasant actually.

I never noticed this vortex problem with the model 37 but I never wore it while riding an unfaired bike, it might have had the same flaw. I also have an Arai XD3, it has a small chin curtain and I have no problem with this vortex action at all. It might very well be that a fairing that got the wind blast off your chest would alleviate the problem as well. For this reason I cannot recommend the AFX-39 for anybody riding an unfaired bike. It is an otherwise pretty decent helmet and great value for the money but with a rather serious situational flaw in my opinion.
