I installed this JVC KWHDR81BT in my SUV two months ago and have been very pleased with this stereo system. I cannot speak about installation because I had the unit professionally installed into my vehicle nor can I critique power output because I also added a 75 watt X 4 power amplifier to drive my aftermarket speakers. After some basic research I determined JVC was offering the features/options I wanted (to try) in a new headunit for a decent price:
- Built-in HD Radio
- Bluetooth
- front USB port
- playback of CDs, CD-Rs, and CD-RW loaded with MP3 and WMA files
- external microphone included
Neutral:
I did not care about the multicolor display but figured it would be able to "blend" in with my gold-toned interior dash lighting; which it does almost perfectly! The combination of this JVC, an amp and component speakers reminds me that I've yet to hear a factory stereo system that can touch aftermarket ... but since sound and tones can be subjective, I'll just say I'm very happy to listen to my tunes as I drive down the road!!
Pros:
As for the unit's operation; the HD radio works great, but I know this of course depends on your vehicles antenna and/or distance to a signal. During a recent trip to NYC the unit had no problems picking through the various HD stations. But there are times when I drive under certain powerlines that the radio "jumps" in and out of HD and it makes the volume fade up and down; yup, it's annoying but adjusting the radio reception modes when you're driving is not easy nor smart. But then again, this unit does give you access to other music source options at the touch of a finger. The Bluetooth is incredible and it's the feature I like the most, took me all of less than a minute without reading the manual to sync my Iphone! For calls, the microphone was installed at the top of my A-pillar and could not be happier (or safer) with the hands-free calling; I'm heard and hear conversations clearly regardless of my windows being up or down. I was using the front USB to connect wired to my iPhone but soon changed to plugging in a SanDisk Cruzer Fit 16 GB Flash Drive SDCZ33-016G I bought from Amazon loaded with 10+ GB of other music in folders I don't keep on my iPhone. I've read complaints how slow loading from a "drive" is with this unit via the USB; all I can say is I'm okay with 10-20 seconds of lag time. The Bluetooth allows me to stream off my iPhone with clarity that is no different from being wired except this option does not charge your device.
Cons:
The display can be drowned out by bright sunlight through the open sunroof at certain times of the day; only happens for prolong periods when traveling East/West with the sun's path. Hardest thing is using and getting accustomed to the unit's buttons and scrolling menus. Not simple, but I'm getting faster longer I own it.
Overall:
I have no reservations buying another JVC KWHDR81BT for my next new vehicle if it's still available!!
